Barkell Ltd, Air Handling Units, Consett, UK, 11 May 2017
We asked Barkell's latest recruit Mark King a few questions to get to know more about our new Technical Sales Manager:
Please introduce yourself
I am 52 years old, married to my wife Sarah who I met at secondary school. We have a son, Bradley, who is 19 years old. I joined the industry in 1986 as a draughtsman for heat exchanger company and then progressed into the applications/technical sales side.
What is your new role at Barkell, and what excites you about the role?
I have joined Barkell taking on the role of “Technical Sales Manager”. What excites me about this role is its diversity in that no one day is the same, the experience of meeting new people and working as part of the new southern team.
Do you have a particular area of specialisation within your chosen field?
Having been within the industry for 30 years I have been involved in array of HVAC products and services involved with ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration. However for at least 20 years of that time I have always had a direct involvement with the bespoke air handling unit market, so I guess this would be my area of specialisation.
Why did you choose a career in Engineering?
I chose a career in engineering as this holds an interest to me which draws on my strengths – I like to know/discover how things work and also the challenge of overcoming problems that sometimes require an engineering solution.
What did you study at university/ college and how has your previous experience lead you to your current role?
My initial college time was to pursue a career in graphics as I was pretty good at drawing. My first role was as a draughtsman for a well-known HVAC heat exchanger company which is how I entered the industry. In this initial role I then had the opportunity to study for an air conditioning and refrigeration diploma at college on a day release basis which helped to progress and further my career within the industry.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Fishing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking cycling, walking – so generally I like being outdoors.
Favourite country visited on holiday and why?
To date, this has got to be the Spanish island of Menorca – as it has a beautiful landscape, lovely beaches and holds some good memories for me. It is also an island that is generally away from the crowds, so is relaxing and peaceful.
If you could take an inanimate object onto a desert island with you, what would it be and why?
Would have to be a fishing rod – it would pass the time and keep me alive!!
What is the music track of your life, and what does it make you think of when you hear it?
Would have to be “Time” by Pink Floyd; a very melancholic track that reminds you to cease the day and make the most of your life, however once realised often too late!!
